Timber
and joinery:
Timber
can be highly sustainable simply because it is a renewable product.
However there are a number of issues in the selection of timber.
Friends
of the Earth do a useful guide on selection and usew of timber
products. Another good site is Forests
Forever from the Timber Trade Federation.
Sustainable
timber is sometimes defined as a tree that is replaced upon felling
-in other words from managed forests -this is only part of the
issue. In a world facing the impact of global warming the rate
of replacement of these forests is an issue, as is the amount
of miles the product travels before reaching its destination.
It is also important to have effective systems to audit the source
of timber -the Forestry Stewardship Council provides such a service
with FSC Certified forests.
