 The sustainable
kitchen
Kitchens
are of course the part of your home where most energy is consumed.
As homes become better insulated and heating costs drop, then
the relative signicance of electrical appliances increases. By
law all electric refrigerators, washing machines, dishwashers
and cookers now have to an energy rating on the scale A-G (illustrated).
You can make a difference by not only choosing A rated appliances,
but also by letting the retailer know it is a key factor in your
choice.
Energy
efficiency even goes as far as the humble kettle -the are several
eco kettles available that work on the principle of only boiling
the quantity of water required -try Nigel's

There
are a few manufacturers making kitchen units from recycled materials
-Chamois and Milestone are pioneers
here. Alternatively, if the base units are still good, then a
more sustainable solution is to replace just the doors.
