Green Oak:

There are a number of companies specialising in green oak framed buildings using traditional construction methods. Typical this comprises massive framed structure held together with pegs in an A-frame or cruck frame construction with lightweight infill panels.

Oak framing has seen a revival in recent years and there are a plethora of companies offering everything from oak components to and entire building.



Oak Joinery Companies:

  • Carpenter Oak -specialists in green oak construction, founded in 1987 by Charley Brentall. Useful image library, fact sheets and blog.
  • English Heritage Buildings -traditional oak framers in East Sussex. Can provide self build frames and the technical backup to erect your frame.
  • Hobbans -traditional timber framers in Essex.
  • Inantuda -traditional oakwrights based in Harrowgate who produce handcrafted oak frames and buildings for home, garden and landscape.
  • McMurdy and Co -craftsmen and specialists in the repair and conservation of
    historic timber framed buildings -they were responsible for the reconstruction of Shakespeares Globe Theatre in London.
  • New Forest Oak -oak framed barns and other buildings -they also utilise their offcuts to make furniture or for smokeries.
  • Oakcraft -bespoke or standard oak framed buildings from their locations in Hampshire, Berkshire or Surrey/Sussex.
  • Prime Oak -bespoke oak framed buildings manufactured on a 368 acre estate in Staffordshire, and also in Holland, Belgium and Ireland.
  • Roundwood Construction -Kent based company specialising in traditional oak construction methods.
  • Sussex Oak Structures -their speciality is in the design, manufacture and erection of traditionally jointed, mortice and tenon oak frames.
  • Welsh Oak Frame -design and manufacture of oak timber frame houses, aimed primarily to the self build market. 
  • Wessex Oak Frame -small craftsmen based company founded by James Reid working almost entirely in oak and based in Corsham, Wiltshire,
  • Westwind Buildings -specialise in the design and construction of green oak framed houses using traditional techniques, combined with modern design and construction methods.
